The Hypnotic, Emotive Sound of Hyper Binary

June 21, 2017

Brothers Joey Sarantis and Yannis Sarantis of Hyper Binary talk about their creative process, the evolution and their brand Konnekt'd.

Q: Where were you guy’s born/currently live?

A: We were both born in Melbourne, Australia and we still currently live here.

Q: What’s it like working with your brother?

A: Working as two brothers is amazing, it allows us to have a bond or connection like no other. We're not only brothers but best friends so the workflow is always balanced.

Q: Can you talk about the background of Hyper Binary and how it's evolved?

A: The background of Hyper Binary started from our previous name as "Sarantis" we were playing gigs under that name whilst we were producing tracks but had not really released any on a label.  We came to a mutual point that we wanted a name that would represent us both and the bond we had, like Binary.. You need the 0 to make the 1 and so forth, once we changed our name we started to build who we were as artists again and have an EP out on TMM Records which is based in the Ukraine.

Q: How would you define your sound?

A: Our sound can be identified as hypnotic, atmospheric, driving, psychedelic and emotive.

Q: Do either of you have a background in music?

A: We both played instruments ranging from Piano, Saxophone, Guitar and Clarinet.

Q: Who are some of your influences?

A: Our influences range from Mike Parker, Wata Igarashi, Ness, Claudio PRC to Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin and Funkadelic.

Q: What is your creative process when creating a track?

A: With our creative process we tend to meditate prior which allows us to be grounded then we open our DAW, turn on some synthesizers, lay down a simple kick and bassline groove, then start to synthesize leads or other sounds ranging from pads, percs and atmospherics. Once you create sounds that you resonate with we attempt to feel how they would be suited in the track and where they would be best. Sometimes no planning or no direction can lead to mistakes that are your best discoveries.

Q: Do you have any new projects you are currently working on?

A: We're currently working on another EP to send off to a label, but we also have 3 new EPs coming out on 3 different Europeans labels from July-September which will be awesome.

Q: What has been one of your favourite venues you've played at?

A: We both love playing out in the bush/forest at a doof/festival, in Australia we have a peak of them from November-February and to play at them is amazing as you get to play what you want without boundaries and the crowd is always up for it. With venues I would have to say Boney is always a treat to play at as it's small, intimate, sweaty and you can just slam down some ripper techno.

Q: Theres so many Dj's out there- What makes Hyper Binary unique?

A: This question was probably the hardest to answer haha, I guess every human is the same but completely unique in their own way the thing that's different with my brother and I is that we are the balance of one another, we love what we do with every ounce of energy we have. We try to connect with the crowd because when you're playing it's not just about you up there it's about everyone coming together and unifying living in that moment of pure bliss which is what music does.

Q: You also run a brand called Konnekt’D can you talk about this?

A: So the brand Konnekt'D consists of Leeroid, Yanni, Jackson, our newest artist Laura and myself. It's essentially a platform that allows us and other likeminded artists to come together to play at parties and project themselves truly. We have brought some internationals down to play for the brand from Monoloc, Alberto Ruiz and Gregor Tresher, and are working hard on more parties in the next few months, one being Locked Groove with Nergal who runs the brand Charades. In the future once we have truly established ourselves I would love us to be able to run a record label allowing people to express and push their music through it.

Q: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

A: The next 5 years.. Haha I can dream where I would like to be with my brother, which would ultimately be living overseas and constantly playing gigs whilst pushing out as many releases as we can.

Q: Do you have anything else you want your viewers to know about you?

A: Be true to yourself, love yourself and love others. Peace!
