Sewn Designs by Alesia Akehurst

November 9, 2016

Alesia Akehurst, Owner of Sewn Designs talks about her process and background behind these trendy, delicate bralettes, along with some of her favourite designers.

Q: Where were you raised/currently live?

A: I'm currently a total gypsy. I was raised in Kelowna and California.and you can usually find me somewhere between Vancouver, Kamloops for most of my life.

Q: Do you have a background in fashion/design?

A: I've been a fashion lover my whole life- I refused to let others pick my outfits starting at 2 years old- but my formal education is actually in Socioeconomics.

Q: Why did you decide to create a lingerie/lifestyle brand?

A: I worked a few traditional jobs and once my last contract ended, I was looking for a creative outlet, so I started sewing. I desperately wanted a bralette and when I couldn’t find one I liked, I decided to make it.

Q: What is your process when designing/planning out each piece?

A: It usually starts with the fabric – if I see lace or elastic that I really like, I start there and plan a palette and design around it.

Q: What are some of your most popular pieces/designs?

A: Muse is definitely MVP, Chloé and Flora are tied for second.

Q: Do you find more people are wearing bralettes instead of actual bras?

A: Definitely. At shows, a lot of women tell me it’s all they wear now. They’re the perfect combo of comfy and sexy. You can’t help but feel good about yourself with one on and I think that’s something a lot of women love.

Q: Your designs are very delicate and classy- do you have any new styles that we can look forward to?

A: I’ve got a few new ones planned for January as well as restocking some favourites!

Q: What does success mean to you?

A: Success can mean a lot of things, but to me the best measure is happiness. I think if you’re happy – most of the time, we’re all entitled to down days – then you’re doing pretty good!

Q: Who are your favourite designers?

A: Ohh I’ve got too many! Small brands I love: Symmetry & Grace, Sashay the Label, Leah Alexandra, and Lavender & Grace. Big brands I love: Madewell, Levis, Reformation, Mother Denim, Everlane. Brands I dream about: Gucci, Stella McCartney, and Celine.

Q: Do you have anything else you want your viewers to know?

A: That I love them so much and their support means the absolute world! I feel so blessed to be able to create beautiful little lacy things for them.
