Daniel Ocean, Fashion and Health

November 13, 2016

After he escaped the corporate world, Mr. Daniel Ocean expanded into the realm of fashion and everything surrounding it. He discusses his startup, Platform Media, creating this brand for himself and how he maintains a healthy balance in life.

Q: Where were you born/currently live?

A: Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, I am a city boy through and through. Toronto has really evolved into a mega city for the arts and has quickly become a place that will be almost impossible to leave. Although NYC or Bali could tempt me.

Q: What are your top 3 favourite fashion items for fall?

A: Oh, this is easy. Wool topcoats in heather grey, tan suede Chelsea boots and lots and lots of black denim. I like the classics.

Q: Explain the time in your life when you decided to focus on men’s lifestyle and how you went about creating a brand for yourself?

A: After escaping from the corporate world, I knew I had to create a baby of my own to nurture. While my role in the menswear community evolved almost accidentally, I at least knew I wanted to be in the fashion industry. It had been a passion since I was a kid yet here I was doing nothing with it. I started to simply document my sense of style on Instagram and it snowballed from there. It's been an amazing journey so far.

Q: You are the co-founder and creative lead of Platform Media can you talk about this for a bit?

A: Platform Media is definitely my new second child to nurture. I co-founded the project with Sara Koonar in order to fill a void in the Canadian marketplace that was desperately needed. A management company to upgrade the system in which influencers and brands connect and execute campaigns. We hand-picked a roster of 6 amazing bloggers and are creating a whole new experience to push premium digital content on social media.

Q: What advice do you have for people wanting to get into the fashion/lifestyle world of blogging and social media?

A: I get asked this every single day and while there are so many things to focus on, the quality of the content is the most important. Invest in great equipment, be inspired by your peers and do not be afraid of how it will be received. Everybody hears footsteps in the beginning but it is so crucial to trust your eye and showcase what you truly want to broadcast to the world. Just do you. If you have talent, people will notice.

Q: What do you see yourself doing in the next 5 years? How will you expand your social media presence and your brand?

A: I don't know! I truly believe that my place in the menswear community will constantly evolve and open doors in the future. Would love to start my own publication or fashion collection. Really, only time will tell.

Q: Who are some of your favourite designers?

A: I really do love the classics. While I appreciate the innovators, the staples are what truly drive my personal style. Tom Ford, YSL, Acne Studios are a few of my faves.

Q: How would you describe your style?

A: Minimal and fitted. The fit makes the man. I believe a man with a good sense of style can wear anything and be memorable if the fit is perfect. I'm not one for prints or eccentric pieces but unique textures and a less is more vibe. Style should be effortless.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you?

A: They're all pretty similar! Working from home is a blessing so it always starts with a cappuccino in bed with my bulldog Junior and catching up on social media and emails. I then spend a few hours around the house listening to my favourite composers like Chopin + Debussy and check off things on the to-do list. Writing blog posts, drafting proposals, brand design etc. Eventually I make my way outside to connect with buddies for coffee and to shoot street style. I always find some time late afternoon or every evening to train in the gym or outside and then nights are either watching sports at home or events around the city. I try to limit my events to just a few a week but it is fun to see new collections and product launches. I admit my days aren't overly riveting but they keep me focused and balanced.

Q: What tips do you have for leading a healthy lifestyle?

A: Just be consistent. Fitness becomes easy and infinitely rewarding when it becomes a hobby, not a task. Do it everyday, even if it's just for 20 minutes. Make moving and challenging your body as much part of your routine as your morning coffee or brushing your teeth. It keeps your spirit high and your fitness gains never ending.

Q: How would you define the word success?

A: Freedom. Success for me is having the ability to choose what I want to work on, when, with whom. I am a very independent person so I find riches in being my own boss, my own motivation. While money is a wonderful vehicle to experience more things in life, having the freedom to grow as a person professionally just makes money an inevitability.

Q: Do you have anything else you want your viewers to know?

A: Do what you would do for free. The happiest people in the world are those who have made that have ether stumbled upon it or have simply not settled for less.
