Tamara Kucera, creator of Young Muse has developed trendy, edgy and unique designs throughout her choker collection. She talks about her favourite designers, her process, and where Young Muse all began.
Q: Where were you born/currently live?
A: I was born in Serbia, grew up in Mississauga, and I am currently living in Toronto. I call Queen West home now!
Q: Have you always had an interest in fashion?
A: Definitely, I love how fashion gives you the ability to express yourself through clothing. I also love the shopping aspect of it, and I’ve really developed a passion for vintage/ thrift shopping!
Q: When did you start Young Muse?
A: Young Muse launched 3 months ago- the idea grew out of my passion for creating a brand. I don’t think anyone really took me seriously at first, but people are only going to believe in your vision as much as you believe in it yourself. You have to just make it happen, and eventually, people will start to notice.
Q: What are your most popular chokers?
A: The most popular chokers have definitely been the Netted Mesh and the Dainty Gold chokers. I think they are versatile and just go with every outfit!
Q: Where do you source all your material?
A: Most of my material is sourced from textile stores throughout Toronto, as well as shops on Etsy. Since starting my own business, I’ve noticed how important it is to support smaller businesses so I try to source as many things as I can from them.
Q: You also have created a wide leather waist belt which is very trendy right now- Do you have any new projects coming up for 2017?
A: The leather belt has been a big hit, and there’s still so much that can be done with it. Future projects will likely include clothing design - I’m excited to experiment.
Q: Who are some of your favourite designers?
A: Some of my favourites have to be Danielle Guizio, Demna Gvasalia, Donna Karan, and Martin Margiela.
Q: What is your process when creating the designs?
A: I’m constantly being inspired by everything around me, and the web is an unlimited source of inspiration. I try to look at as many photos I can per day- I probably have a million screenshots on my phone of textures, fabrics, outfits, and other things that inspire me. Once I have enough ideas, I source materials to make my ideas come to life.
Q: Where do you see Young Muse in the next 5 years?
A: The next step is to definitely start experimenting with clothing. In five years I would like Young Muse to be a clothing + accessories label that is available in stores around the world.
Q: Chokers are so in right now! How do you differentiate yourself from other choker brands?
A: I try my best to give people ideas on how they can wear my products. I’ve collaborated with so many amazing bloggers who have taken really great photos of how my pieces can be worn and I think that’s key. A lot of people need help visualizing how they can style a certain piece.
Q: Do you have anything else you want your viewers to know?
A: I’m really excited about hosting my first Young Muse Pop-Up at the super trendy Untitled&Co (438 Queen Street West, Toronto) on Saturday, Feb 25th!
