Q: Where were you born/currently live?
A: I was born in Melbourne, Australia and I have been here all of my life.
Q: Have you always been interested in fashion?
A: Yeah I think I have always had an interest even from a young age. However I remember in High School, I wanted this pair of purple or green jeans that KSUBI (formally known as TSUBI) (RIP) made, but my parents never let me buy them. So I just went into their walk-in-robe and took their jeans from the 80’s, bleached them and then added color. I remember I made 3 pairs of jeans; electric blue, green and purple – I even hand stitched my name into the pocket of the jeans lol.
Then I guess from there, I just got introduced to more brands and styles due to the rise of the internet and social media – and now you have me today, cool as hell.
Q: Do you have an educational background in fashion?
A: Nah, I actually come from an advertising background. I thought about studying fashion, but then I also thought that really no one can teach me to be creative, plus I do not like listening to people.
Q: Can you talk about your brand alphabet city for a bit? How did this all start?
A: Yeah sure. Alphabet City started because essentially I had always wanted to create my own brand and to make clothes, I just did not know how I would actually reach people. Then I noticed the rise of Instagram, my account was gaining a following and I thought why the fuck not, and started it all from scratch. Plus, I also begun to notice most of the retail stores here stocked really basic clothes and fits. I was pissed off when I couldn’t find anything in-store or online that I actually wanted to wear, so I had to try do something about that.
I slowly started building my ideas and then the fun stuff started.
Q: What is your design process?
A: Haha, I generally think about something in my head for weeks before I actually do anything. I think it is just a process of elimination to a degree. If weeks pass by and I still see the idea as something cool, I will continue building it up.
Q: Do you have any new projects that you are currently working on?
A: Yeah, I have like 4 new collections I plan on releasing in the coming months – they are currently sitting in my spare room I use as a warehouse. I am just waiting for the right time to release them.
In bigger news though, I am working on my 2018 collection which in my opinion is going to be really cool. This also includes evolving alphabet city that in turn, will allow me to really showcase what Alphabet City as a brand is about. The first year was all about finding a place for me. Now I know it, so it’ll be fun.
Q: How would you define the word success?
A: I don't know, I guess one day I will find out.
Q: Who are some of your favourite designers?
A: Mmm, I don’t really have a favourite designer. I like lots of different brands/styles but I prefer to interpret it in my own way.
Q: What are your go to items of clothes?
A: Depending on what I am doing, the weather, or where I am going – but I generally wear slouch pants, something oversized, dad cap & sneakers. Ima g tight clothes ain't my thang bro
Q: How would you describe your style in 3 words?
A: Oversized, Cool, Cozy.
Q: Do you have anything else you want your viewers to know about you?
A: I guess just that I am just a normal person who for some reason gets a few likes on Instagram, and it’s cool to see people fuck with me just being me.
I think it’s also so dope to see how many people in the space of a year actually support Alphabet City. It’s really humbling to a degree. So s/o to them, I look forward to the future.
PS: If anyone needs help with social media for their business holla @ me, I rule at social media.
