Vancouver Based Fashion NOT DEAD YET

Adam-Lin Bungag, designer of NOT DEAD YET talks about his background into fashion, his creative process and his next steps.


Q: Where were you born and where do you currently live?


I was born in the Philippines, came to Canada when I was a year old. I’m currently living in Vancouver.


Q: Can you talk about the background of how you got into fashion?


A: Fashion was a happy accident for me. Growing up I never saw fashion as an outlet for creativity. I was raised in strict private schooling with a uniform which framed my perspective of fashion and clothing as form of social distinction. It was only after post secondary where I came to understand the importance of clothing and garments as a form of expression and identity.


Q: What is your creative process when designing?


A: It’s different every time. I focus on inspiration that is non tangible, mainly drawing from personal experience. For example, P U R S U I T SS 18 was based on my journey through sexual identity and how that would look like in physicality. I felt like the world hurt me for who I was, and branded me with an identity that I couldn’t connect with. Taking non-physical inspiration, to me, is much more open to creative and audience interpretation.


Q: You were recently featured in VOGUE UK for the p SS18 collection as well as sharing your collections at Vancouver Fashion Week, the Little Black Dress Gala, Vancity Street, RawArtists and Vancouver Emerging Designers Show. This is quite the accomplishment-.What are your emotions towards this?


A: I feel overwhelmed with gratitude for all the opportunities I’ve had, though I don’t really feel any certain way about them. To me, those moments and opportunities are part of much larger picture of my career.


Q: Who inspires you?


A: I get heavily inspired by music. Right now I’m listening to artists like Arca, and 18+ who heavily influence my attitude and how I create collections.


Q: How long have you been designing?


A: A Year.


Q: You currently focus on menswear- Do you see yourself focusing on this or branching out into women’s designs?


A: I try to stay away from identifiers such as menswear and womenswear. I would like to have more women in my show, but the casting processes and the team decisions ultimately lead to an all male cast for the show.


Q: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?


A: I see myself in London, New York, or Japan. Places where there is anarchy, or a history of it.


Q: Do you have any exciting projects you are currently working on?


A: A new collection and sort of a rebranding, but I don’t want to call it that. It’s more a necessary step.


Q: Where do you source all your fabrics and materials?


A: Locally? But not really, I don’t really have a set supplier.


Q: How would you describe your brand in 3 words?


A: Not Dead Yet


Q: Do you have anything else you want people to know about you?


A: Nothing that they cant find out through Instagram.
