A Refreshing Look at The Creative Mind of Isla Pouliot

January 22, 2018

At such a young age, 14 year old Isla Pouliot has strongly identified who he is and what his passions are in life. He talks about some of the collaborations he's done, his inspiration from his friends surrounding him and where he sees himself in the future.

Q: Where were you born and where do you currently live?

A: I was born and raised in Coquitlam, BC which is like a trie city out of Vancouver that’s pretty cool and now I live in East Van with my dad and Coquitlam with my Mum.

Q: Can you talk about how you got involved in the fashion and creative realm?

A: Well, my best friend Liyan Carson and I admired and fell in love with Lillzkillz, who is a local fashion designer in Vancouver. She works at Used House of Vintage and Liyan and I would go in there just to talk to her and one day we went in and her friends were there. Conor Cunningham (mescondi) and Reece Voyer. They were both talking about doing a shoot with me and Liyan and I was like “Uhh okay why not this is kinda weird.” I mean I kept an open mind to it and so that was my first shoot. It was really cool to see the outcome because I enjoyed seeing the creativity and stuff that the photographers put into the photos, I think it’s just so dope. I just started hanging out with them every single day and then just started shooting.

Q: Who are some of the people you collaborate with?

A: I work a lot with Reece Voyer and mescondi who are some of my best friends and also managers. I’ve worked with photographers by the names of Grant harder, Megan Magdalena, Cole Sprouse and a few other really incredible/talented  photographers in the city.

Q: At such a young age you seem to have a strong eye and sense of who you are and what your style is. How would you describe your style and when did you develop this?

A: I don't know how I would describe my style. Kind of just like a skater boy but with cool colours. I get a lot of my fashion inspiration from Lillz Killz and mescondi.  All my friends have cool style and it really kind of helped me develop my style.

Q: What are your top 3 articles of clothing you couldn’t live without?

A: Um, fuck that’s hard, probably this really sick astro boy puffer I have it’s yellow and blue, it's dope. I don’t think I could live without my Profanity cargo pants and my just turquoise vans because I wear them a lot.

Q: Who are some of your favourite designers?

A: Lillzkillz, Yohji Yamamoto and Demna Gvasalia.

Q: You were recently part of the “WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY DOING VOL 1.” Fashion & Sounds event at the Fox Cabaret can you talk about this for a bit?

A: Yeah wow, it was just so crazy. This event meant so much to my friends and I. It was just so cool to see how many people came and that they fucked with what we are doing, liked it and supported us. This show was also my very first show I’ve ever walked in and it made me super nervous but I’m glad I did it and got to walk for the designers I did. But yeah it was just so fun and cool. I really appreciate everyone who came out to the show.

Q: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

A: Honestly, I really don’t know but hopefully living in New York or something because I really don’t want to stay here in Vancouver. Don’t get me wrong I love it but there’s really no culture here and it sucks. I hope that I’ll be living in New York with all my friends and hopefully being able to do modelling for a living.

Q: Where have been some of your favourite shoots?

A: One of my favourite shoots I’ve done has definitely been the shoot I did with Mescondi, Reece Voyer, Cole Sprouse and Antonio Verdicchio. We went out to this farm and this other model and I were dressed in cow print and we were next to cows. It was really cool and it was pouring rain outside. It was just such a fun experience all around that whole day.

Q: What would be your dream collaboration?

A: I would love to collaborate with Tyler, the Creator for his company Golf, that’s my dream. I would love to work with brands like Vetements, Comme des garçon, and Adidas again.

Q: What does a day in the life of Isla Pouliot look like?

A: Well, I wake up at around 10 and usually call mescondi or Reece to see what they’re up too and then go meet up with them maybe do a shoot just hang out with friends and play video games, nothing too interesting.

Q: Do you have anything else you want people to know about you?

A: I’m a little transgender boy.
