Kevin Kuemper and His Passion for Photography

I chatted with Kevin Kuemper about how he branched into photography, his influences and styles and advice he has for someone wanting to get into this creative realm.

Q: Where were you born and where do you currently live?

A: I currently live in Kelowna BC, which is where I was born and raised.

Q: What did you graduate from at UBCO? And do you think you will transfer over into a more creative career?

A: I graduated from UBCO with a B.Sc degree in Earth and Environmental Science. However, I decided to change my career path and I am now actually back in school at UBCO with the Nursing program. At the time, no I do not think I will transfer into a more creative career. I consider photography one of my hobbies and will continue to shoot on my spare time. Although I will always keep my doors open to photography related opportunities.

Q: When did you develop an eye for photography and can you talk about this for a bit?

A: I became drawn to the photography scene towards the end of 2016. At the time, a good friend of mine had just purchased his first camera setup and we decided to go on a hike and shoot a night photo overlooking Kelowna. While he was composing and setting up his shot with the newly purchased gear, I aimlessly stood there with my iphone wishing I had a camera of my own. 2 weeks later I picked up my first DSLR, a Canon 7D. Ever since I have been hooked.

Q: What kind of equipment/camera do you use for shooting?

A: I am currently shooting with a Canon 6D, with my two go to lens’ being a canon 28-35mm 2.8 for landscape / everyday use, and a canon 85mm 1.2 for portraits.

Q: Do you have a formal training background in photography or did you just pick it up on your own?

A: I am self-taught with the aid of YouTube for both the shooting and editing aspect sides of photography.

Q: What is your favourite lens to use and why?

A: I currently do not have a favourite lens, due to the fact that certain shots demand certain qualities from the lens being used. However I do love to use my 85mm 1.2 to generate an ultra soft blurred bokeh background ;)

Q: What is your favourite subject to photograph?

A: I am an avid outdoorsy adventure type of guy. With that being said I like to capture large landscapes or just anything nature related in general.

Q: Which photographers influenced you and how did they influence your thinking and photography style?

A: A few photographers that I have come across have all been found on Instagram. Individuals such as Fursty, Kpunkka, and Jannikobenhoff have all inspired me both through the way they edit their photos and also by their choice of subjects.

Q: Is this something that you want to pursue as a career path?

A: If the right opportunities were to arise, possibly! I consider photography not only a hobby but a strong passion and if things were to steer in the career direction, I may pursue that path when and if that time comes.

Q: What motivates you to continue taking pictures?

A: Being able to capture a moment in time and to keep it as a visual to look back on.

Q: What advice do you have for someone wanting to get into photography?

A: Don’t be afraid to try something different and to think outside the box!

If you’re looking to get into photography on a budget, purchase your equipment used. You’ll easily save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars ;)

Q: Where are some of the top places you would like to travel in the world?

A: On the top of my list are currently both Iceland and New Zealand. Both countries look absolutely stunning and would love to shoot their landscapes.

Q: Do you have anything else you want people to know about you?

A: If my hectic lifestyle allowed it, I could easily spend hours on end getting caught up editing a single photo.
